When we started Leseding Care Givers in June 2000 , it was after I realized that this the high number of people affected and infected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic was so high, and ravaged our communities , and left them without hope. The extent of the pandemic ruled out any traditional charitable or institutional models of care only. A model founded on home and community based care and empowering the affected and infected people to better take care of themselves and those around them, had any chance of being sustainable and successful. Hence i left working my full time work as a community health worker at Moretele Sunrise Hospice by the year 2000 to start a community based organization called Leseding.
The name “Leseding” is Setswana or Sotho word for “where light is ”, and organisation was started to bring light of hope to those affected and infected by the pandemic, and equally encourage all members of society to be the light of hope themselves, and make many more others to pass this
We aim to support communities to improve the quality of life of their beneficiaries and their families, and to sustain such, in key areas of health (nutrition, physical, emotional and spiritual), education, economic status, and the environment. The dedication and care shown by our volunteers and caregivers in an effort to improve the lives of our beneficiaries, their families and communities is inspiring. Similarly, families are responding to the challenge by opening their doors and caring for children in their communities, as well as their own children, all with little or no resources.
This generosity of spirit reinforces that we as South Africans genuinely care for our own. However, to successfully achieve this on the scale required, communities cannot do it alone. The key to our success lies in a group effort from not just communities, but government, corporations and NGOs alike, both locally and internationally. Effective planning and organising will fast track the process but only a collective effort will ensure a sustainable impact and give these people a chance for a better future. Together we aim to make a difference!
